NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 Networks and Sensors

MNE 110 delves into the foundational principles and practical aspects of marine electronic networking. Beginning with the serial data communication standard, students will explore its message structures, common sentence types, and interfacing techniques for various transducers such as depth, speed, and GPS receivers. The course then transitions to the advanced network bus standard, covering its topology, messaging protocol, and plug-and-play functionality for more complex systems. Emphasis is placed on understanding parameter group numbers (PGNs), network segmentation, and power considerations. Practical skills include connecting and configuring sensors, integrating engine data via gateways, and using diagnostic tools to identify and resolve network issues. Through theoretical lessons and hands-on laboratory exercises, participants will develop the competencies required to install, maintain, and troubleshoot marine electronic systems effectively.
